The 11th Edition of the National Spelling Bee Contest took place at the Accra Digital Centre in Accra on Saturday, February 3, 2018.
12-year-old Shifa Amankwa-Gabbey has emerged winner of the 2018 edition of the National Spelling Bee Championship.
Shifa was pushed hard by the two runners-up, Raj Thakwani and Akshaya Janikiraman, both from DPS International.
Raj, 11, rose above 195 others to emerge as 1st runner during the 2018 National Spelling Bee Contest.
Akshaya Janikiraman, 12, also glowed above 194 others to emerge as the 2nd runner up in the highly-competitive National Contest.
First runner-up, Raj Thakwani received a GHC2,000 scholarship from Indomie, GHc800 voucher from Blue Knights Bookshop, a DSTV decoder and other products from the sponsors.
Akshaya also received GHC1,500 scholarships from Indomie, a DSTV decoder, Ghc500 voucher from Blue Knights and assorted products from sponsors.
Raj Thakwani and Akshaya Janikiraman also received gold medals.
High profile personalities including the former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson were turned up in support of the competition.
The launch of this year’s competition was held under the theme, ‘The relevance of the mother tongue in literacy’.
The National Spelling Bee competition is being championed in Ghana by the Young Educators Foundation (YEF), an international NGO that seeks to improve the lives of the youth through literacy.
Everyone has the fire but the champions know when to ignite the spark.
